How bad is the drought situation here? It's critically bad, actually. Even the wildlife are facing starvation and perishing of thirst. I saw some wild pigs another night (they're rather common throughout Texas), and they looked like these folks were barely surviving in a state of near-starvation. My neighbors tell me to shoot the poor creatures out of large mercy, but I still do not have the heart to pull the trigger using a wild pig. I do hear rifle shots every day or two, however, so somebody else is pretty literally bringing home your bacon while probably easing the starvation burden upon those wild pigs which might be somehow still alive. Overpopulation of wild dogs, it turns out, sometimes has its own consequences in terms of animal suffering. In talking to nearby ranchers, I've learned that the beef processing facilities are actually backlogged for weeks due to the fact that ranchers can't maintain their cattle fed, so they're having these people slaughtered instead. This has the short-term effect of thrusting beef costs into alarmingly low terrain, and it's also decimating your cattle population across Colorado. If this drought remains, many Texas cattle herds could be down to just twenty percent of these normal size. And even those remaining cattle aren't looking well fed today. Most ranchers can't even afford to bring in the hay, either, because fuel prices help make hay transportation extremely high priced.
